The 4 Series Gran Coupe arrives at a time when Coupe 4 doors are all the rage but has the added advantage of entering the mid-size sector whereby buyers will have the easy option of choosing between it and the aging Audi A5 Sportback. It is similar in principle to the good-looking BMW 6 Series Gran coupe but differs at the rear with the coupe roofline tapering to a hatchback boot.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe might have four doors but it shares the exact length and width as the two-door 4 series measuring 4,638mm long and 1,825 mm wide. The roofline has been raised by 12 mm and extended by 112 mm ensuring that it’s sporty proportions are maintained.

The slightly stretched roof means that you get more interior space and the gentle flow of the roof to the boot has seen boot space grow by 35 litres over the two doors 4 Series.

Five engine options will be available at launch. Top of the range is the 435i’s, which is a six-cylinder in-line 3.0-liter petrol engine delivering 306 hp. Next is the 428i Gran Coupé with a four-cylinder 2.0-liter petrol delivering 245hp. The BMW 420i Gran Coupé is also four-cylinders and produces 184hp.

The other engines are the diesels with the top of the range being the 420d which is a four cylinder with 184hp. The 418d is the least powerful engine option in the 4 Series Gran Coupe line-up with 143hp. All engines send drive to the rear wheels via a Six speed manual transmission or an eight speed steptronic. But the BMW 428i Gran Coupe and 420d Gran Coupe can be optionally equipped with BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive technology.

Performance ranges from 0-60mph of 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 132 mph for the 418d to 5.2 seconds and 155 mph (electronically limited) for the 435. The interior is standard 4 Series with the exception of its bigger and more capacious rear seats which have split-folding seats which can be laid flat to increase carrying capacity.
